2018 Small Grain Field Day

Malted barley has become an increasing popular alternative crop. The 2018 Small Grain Field Day will feature special sessions on malted barley including economic considerations, variety selection, nutrient needs, and pest management. Other sessions at the field day include wheat production and management and double-cropping soybeans with small-grain production. Participants will have the opportunity to walk through research plots, take part in hands-on activities and view equipment demonstrations. Both commercial and private pesticide applicator credits as well as Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) credits will be offered to field day participants. The schedule for the field day is:

9:30 am -10:00 am: Registration

10:00 am: Welcome / Introduction

10:15 am – Noon: Morning Sessions (choose 2)

• Soybean Production With Small Grains (Mike Sword and Kelley Tilmon, OSU, speakers)

  • Interseeding between 15-inch small grain rows
  • Planting into chemically-killed cover crop
  • Planting into mechanically killed 9crimped/rolled) cover crops
  • Planting into stubble (crop removed for long straw market
  • Insect management

• Growing Malting Barley

  • Barley varieties adapted to Ohio: Eric Stockinger, speaker
  • Barley research update: Laura Lindsey, OSU, speaker

• Barley Economics: Contracts and Budgets (Brad Bergefurd & Mary Griffith, OSU, speakers)

  • Origin Malts
  • Barley Enterprise Budget

• Malting Barley Agronomic Considerations

  • Disease management: Pierce Paul, OSU, speaker
  • Fertility needs and assessment: Steve Culman, OSU, speaker

12:15 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch (included in registration)

1:15 - 2:45 p.m.: Afternoon Sessions (choose 1)
